The Deer Isles
As we were driving up to Maine we saw car after car topped with sea kayaks. No doubt a lot of those cars were coming from Stonington. Stonington is the launch site for the Deer Isle Archipelago. And this is why I came to Maine. It's a sea kayaker's paradise. Island after beautiful island stretches across the glimmering sea. The islands are so close together that the distances are often measured in yards not miles. And most of the islands are uninhabited. The islands are probably the best place on the East Coast to paddle because there are so many and they provide protection from the wind and ocean swells.
The only limitation, for sea kayakers, is the lack of launch sites. We launched from Old Quarry Campgrounds and I highly recommend this launch site. Old Quarry charges a small launch fee and charges a daily parking fee but they also provide maps and a place to file your float plan. The islands have cell phone coverage so it's easy to call the campground if you're going to extend your stay or if someone in your party needs medical attention. They also have hot showers (for a small fee) which were very welcome after we had spent five days on our island without bathing.
