Mt. Desert Island
I probably spent about a month researching kayaking options around Mt. Desert Island. The east side of the island is rocky and inhospitable to kayaks so kayaking options along that shoreline were limited. Also our main focus was to find seals and according to the guidebooks the largest concentration of seals would be found around Bartlett Island on the west side of Mt. Desert Island. Off the northern tip of Bartlett sits another very small island called "The Hub," which is part of the Maine Island Trail and open for camping. Shannon and I both liked the idea of camping on an island as opposed to camping at a campground. So we decided to spend two nights on the Hub (which is the limit) and then another two nights at Lamoine State Park Campground. We didn't see many seals around Mt. Desert Island but we saw lots of Acadia and took one day off from kayaking to hike the eastern side of the island.
The map below was "borrowed" from an Acadia National Park website. Unfortunately it does not show "The Hub" or Bartlett Island which rests just off the Pretty Marsh Picnic Area.
