Around town
Washington Snow Storm '09
December 21 2009 01:36 PM
Some photos from the weekend's big snowstorm. We got about
23".
This is Great Falls from the Virginia side. Rob and I ignored the warnings about staying off the roads to drive to Great Falls Park for some winter snowshoeing. It was beautiful.
We were the first ones to break the snow. And the new snowshoes worked great.
Rob shows off his new snowshoes at the overlook for the falls. More photos HERE.

More fun with the GoPro Hero Cam. Rob attached the Hero to the hood of the car pointed back and the driver seat and set it to take a photo every few seconds. Played back as a video it compresses a 40 minute drive into a 2.28 minute video.
Last weekend the National Capitol Area Women's Paddling Association (NCAWPA) had their first annual Dragon Boat/ Outrigger Canoe training weekend. Usually there is a training camp in Florida that a lot of members attend but due to cost and other obligations (we want to keep our jobs) most decided to punt the Florida training camp. So we had our own training camp on the lovely, but polluted, Anacostia River. Nothing gets your heart rate up like paddling through toxic water.

Cherry Blossoms in DC
April 04 2007 10:56 PM
Two events herald the return of Spring in DC for me ... the blossoming of the cherry trees surrounding the tidal basin and the return of the tourists. Tuesday afternoon I walked down to the tidal basin from my office at the Department of Agriculture on 14th Street. The sidewalks were packed with tourists so thick that they pushed into the street often stopping the cars. When I lived in the city I used to curse the return of the tourists in the Spring. They're often looking down at their maps not really looking where they're going. They don't always obey the walk signals at the intersection. For drivers, they're a nuisance. But Tuesday I was one of them, pushing and shoving to get in the herd to cross the street.
I didn't have time to walk the perimeter of the tidal basin but here are a few photos of Spring.
